NASA’s next four-person astronaut crew has entered quarantine as they prepare for launch. On July 17, 2025, the Crew-11 team – led by NASA astronaut Zena Cardman (commander) alongside NASA pilot Nick Hague and mission specialists Thomas Pesquet (ESA) and Alexander Grebenkin (Roscosmos) – began a two-week health-stabilization protocol at Johnson Space Center in Houston. This “health stabilization” or quarantine period is a routine, Apollo-era practice to ensure the crew and station remain free of illness. The crew will continue final training before traveling to Kennedy Space Center, with a launch now targeting late July 2025 (no earlier than July…

On July 15, a massive filament eruption from the sun’s northeastern limb exploded in an eye-popping explosion of solar filth and fury, and a bright chunk of it was blown half a million miles into space – a quarter the distance between the Earth and the moon. High-definition video of the event was captured by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), cutting out the atmosphere as the unstable filament destroyed itself. Ranks of towering walls of plasma, stretching more than 12,400 miles high and more than three times that wide, rose from the wreckage, giving rise to a spectacular “canyon of…
China’s Tianwen 2 probe, en route to collect samples from a near-Earth asteroid, has captured striking images of Earth and the moon shortly after launch. The snapshots, taken using the spacecraft’s narrow field of view navigation sensor, show our planet and its natural satellite as viewed from approximately 590,000 kilometers away. Launched aboard a Long March 3B rocket from Xichang on May 28, the spacecraft is now on a multi-year journey to the small asteroid Kamo’oalewa, one of Earth’s known quasi moons, where it will conduct scientific surveys and sample collection.Tianwen 2 Probe Sends Images from Deep Space, Prepares for…
NASA’s NISAR Earth-observing satellite (concept image shown) will carry an advanced dual-band radar system to map Earth’s land and ice in 3D. NASA will host a news conference at 12 p.m. EDT on Monday, July 21, to preview this mission and its science objectives. The NISAR satellite is a first-of-its-kind collaboration between NASA and India’s ISRO and is designed to deliver unprecedented 3D views of Earth and detect movements down to the centimeter. Launch is targeted for no earlier than late July from ISRO’s Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory streaming the briefing live online.Mission…
Scientists have shown the elusive phenomenon of quantum computing that could create the way for fault-tolerant machines, which are much powerful than any of the supercomputers. Magic state distillation is the process which was proposed 20 years ago; however, the use of logical qubits has puzzled scientists since then. It has long been considered crucial for making high-quality resources, called magic states, required to complete the quantum computer’s potential. It has been possible on plains, till now, by which the high-quality magic states are purified so that the complex algorithms can use them. It has not been possible on the…
Welcome to Full Capacity, a weekly briefing on all the most important developments of the past week with a personal take on the news from our editor-in-chief, Mithun Varkey, delivered to your inbox every Saturday. Battle for talent. One of the most talked-about appointments was Lloyd’s CEO John Neal’s decision to join Aon earlier this year. However, it led to some mid-week drama as AIG announced that Neal would be joining the insurer as president effective from December 1 and ditching a career at the reinsurance broker as its global reinsurance CEO. In the wake of Neal’s departure, Aon, it…
